David Burton, 1973 Ph.D. Art Education

David Burton has been a professor of art education at Virginia Commonwealth University for thirty- nine years. He received his B.F.A. in painting from Syracuse University, a M.A. in art education from New York University, and a Ph.D. in art education from Penn State. He is a Distinguished Fellow of both the National Art Education Association (NAEA) and the Virginia Art Education Association (VAEA). He was the NAEA National Higher Education Art Educator of the Year in 2001, and received the June King McFee Award in 2005. He shared the Manual Barkan Memorial Award for Research in 2003. Dr. Burton has received 3 National Art Education Foundation (NAEF) grants. Dr. Burton’s research includes numerous demographic studies in art education, including quartile analyses of the 1997 and 2008 NAEP data for Visual Arts. He is the author of Exhibiting Student Art. He is currently involved in historical research related to the NAEA Yearbooks, the original publications of the NAEA.
