Academic Progress

Academic Status

(Faculty Senate Policy 54-00)

In addition to the requirements of a major, the University requires a minimum 2.00 cumulative grade-point average (CGPA) for an undergraduate degree. To ensure progress toward a degree, the University uses different academic statuses:

  • Good Standing (minimum 2.00 CGPA)
  • Academic Warning (below 2.00 CGPA)
  • Academic Suspension (on Academic Warning and semester GPA below 2.00)
  • Academic Dismissal (after two Academic Suspensions, semester GPA below 2.00)

To learn more about the different statuses and how to return to Good Standing, click on the appropriate status above.

Satisfactory Academic Progress and Student Aid

Penn State's Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Policy outlines the federal regulations the Office of Student Aid must follow to monitor student progression toward completion of degree and certificate programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree levels to remain eligible for financial aid.

Visit the Faculty Senate website for complete information on the policy and appeal process.
