Workshops for Adults:
~ Go Crazy for Quilting!, Saturday, August 4, noon
“Crazy quilts” are defined by the sewing of assorted fabrics into asymmetrical designs in order to create an irregular patchwork. Under the guidance of quilt maker Kimberly Davis, participants will view crazy quilts in the Terasaki Collection, and then hand sew a crazy-quilt block that can be used as a quilt square or pillow top. Participants must purchase a $15 packet of materials from the instructor.
The workshop is free, but participants must preregister by contacting the curator of education at 814-863-9188 or

~ Pots, Bowls, and Vases: (In)formed by Nature, Saturday, August 11, 10:15 a.m.
In this workshop led by Heather Rayius, art educator, children will view and sketch vessels in the Tonkin Gallery of Ceramic Art, take a nature walk on campus, and create their own clay vessels. Recommended for ages 7-9. Workshop is free, but participants must preregister at 814-865-7673 or

College of Arts and Architecture All-College Meeting
In order to avoid conflicts with classes, the All-College meeting will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2012, at the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center, beginning at 8:15 a.m. with a continental breakfast. The meeting will begin at 8:45 a.m. and will conclude with a luncheon starting at 11:45 a.m. The luncheon will end at 1:00 p.m. All new faculty and staff will be introduced, along with the most recent class of new tenured and promoted faculty members. College offices may be closed so all faculty and staff have the opportunity to attend the meeting.
Please note, the breakfast and meeting will be held in President’s Hall 1 and 2; and the lunch will be held in Dean’s Hall 1 and 2.

College’s Staff Advisory Council Seeks Nominations for Staff Recognition Award
The college’s Staff Advisory Council is seeking nominations for the Staff Special Recognition Award for the summer semester. The award recognizes individuals who went above and beyond their routine work to complete a task or assist someone. The recipient will be recognized at the next All-College Meeting following the awarding semester. 

Recipients are to be chosen with majority vote by the A&A Staff Advisory Council. This semester’s deadline date for submitting a nomination is Friday, August 17. For the summer 2012 nomination form, visit


Faculty and Teaching Assistants to Explore Technologies for Teaching During Summer-Fest
Faculty, instructors, and graduate students are invited to participate in Summer-Fest, a week of free workshops, seminars, and presentations spotlighting technology as it relates to pedagogy and research. Sessions are scheduled to take place August 13-17 and will highlight the ways instructors at Penn State are using technology to enhance classes and put innovative teaching ideas into practice.

The Mémorial de l’abolition de l’esclavage (Memorial to the Abolition of
in Nantes (France), a project for which Ron Henderson, head and professor of landscape architecture, was one of the landscape design consultants, has been awarded Honorable Mention in the annual European Prize for Urban Public Space, an initiative of the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB). The Prize is a biennial competition organized by seven European institutions with the aim to recognize and encourage the recovery projects and defense of public space in cities. Five projects were honored from several hundred submissions. The European Prize criteria and description of the project can be found at

Emily Schiller, Ph.D. candidate in art history, has been selected to be a McDermott Graduate Curatorial Intern at the Dallas Museum of Art from September 2012 to May 2013. She will divide her hours between the Curator of American Art and the Curator of Decorative Arts and Design. Her assignments will relate to the installation and records of the museum's permanent collections, researching upcoming exhibitions on jewelry and early twentieth-century painters, and assisting in the reorganization of their American galleries. 

Kimberly Musial, Ph.D. candidate in art history, will present a paper, “Travail de panneau: The Effects of Early Film on Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s Au Cirque Series,” at the Third International Conference on the Image, Higher School of Humanities and Journalism, Poznan, Poland, September 14-16, 2012.
