Stuckeman School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture

The late eighteenth century witnessed the birth of modern orchestration—the art of assigning melodies and harmonies to the instruments in an orchestra. Delving into the music of Gluck, Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, this talk explores what orchestration is and what it meant to composers and listeners in the early Romantic period.

Palmer Museum of Art Holiday Art and Ornament Sale
Friends of the Palmer Museum of Art will host the 2013 Holiday Art and Ornament Sale on Saturday, December 7, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., at the museum. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Palmer Museum and will be used to extend the education outreach program, help acquire works of arts, and help ensure that the museum will remain a vital and free-admission resource for the community.

This annual showcase concert will feature both large and small ensembles as well as the school's most outstanding soloists. Highlights of the Concert Band's program include a transcription of Franz Biebl's famous choral work, "Ave Maria," and a three-movement composition by Gordon Jacob. The Concert Band is conducted by Robert Hickey, a graduate student in wind conducting.
The Symphonic Band presents a program including works by British composer Gustav Holst, and American composers Vincent Persichetti and John Mackey. The ensemble is conducted by Penn State's director of concert bands Dennis Glocke and assisted by wind conducting graduate student Eric Palmquist. For more information, click here.

President's Fund for Undergraduate Research
The College of Arts and Architecture has once again been granted $2,000 from the "President's Fund for Undergraduate Research," allowing for small grants ($500-700) to support undergraduate research/creative activity across the college during the spring 2014 semester. Interested faculty may submit one-page proposals to their unit directors/heads. (Please inquire as to the internal deadline set by your unit's administrative office.) Unit heads shall forward proposals along with their recommendations in digital format to Linda Wheeland (email@example.com) in the Undergraduate Studies Office by 5:00 p.m., December 11, 2013. Notice of awards will be distributed by December 20.
Nominations Sought for Outreach Awards
The University Council on Engaged Scholarship and the Faculty Senate invites nominations for the 16th Annual Penn State Faculty Outreach Award and the 6th Annual Penn State Community Engagement and Scholarship Award. These awards underscore Penn State’s deep commitment to outreach and engaged scholarship in partnership with our communities.
The Faculty Outreach Award recognizes faculty who have made significant contributions to engaged scholarship through outreach at Penn State. Fifteen distinguished faculty have received this award since its inception.
The Community Engagement and Scholarship Award recognizes outstanding Penn State engaged scholarship initiatives conducted in partnership with communities. The project selected as the winner of the Community Engagement and Scholarship Award goes on to represent Penn State in the regional W.K. Kellogg Foundation Engagement Award and the national C. Peter Magrath University Community Engagement Award competitions sponsored by the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities. Penn State had the honor of winning the national or regional award in 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2013 for four outstanding engaged scholarship initiatives, resulting in national visibility for the University and the projects.

Nominations Open for International Award
Nominations are open for the 2013-14 W. LaMarr Kopp International Achievement Awards, which recognizes individuals who make extraordinary contributions to the advancement of the international mission of the University.
Four awards are given annually in the categories of undergraduate student, graduate student, staff member, and faculty member. Criteria for the awards include leadership and support for international education, service to the international community, and research with a significant international component.

Rock Ethics Institute Seeks Nominations for 2014 Stand Up Awards
The Rock Ethics Institute at Penn State is seeking nominations for its 2014 Stand Up Awards honoring undergraduate students at Penn State's campuses who have demonstrated ethical leadership in taking a stand for a person, cause, or belief. The goal of the award is to recognize courageous individuals and to inform the entire Penn State community of how often the extraordinary act is possible in ordinary circumstances. For example, in 2013, The Rock honored seniors Taryn Noll and Gizelle Studevent. Noll created a support group at the University Park campus to help students cope with family illnesses or crises. Studevent organized a group to help young people learn about and address the problem of bullying. Click here to see profiles of other recent award recipients.
Any faculty, staff, student, or community member at any Penn State campus may nominate undergraduate students who are ethical leaders and have accomplished much during their time at Penn State. Selected honorees will receive an award of $1,000 each, be recognized at a spring 2014 ceremony and in a short video, and highlighted in traditional and digital publicity throughout the University. Celebrate the Holiday Season with WinterFest - A Week of Free, Online Technology Workshops
Information Technology Services (ITS) Training Services has designed a special, week-long training event, January 6-10, with an all-star lineup of training on teaching technologies and on the technology tools you use everyday. Explore technologies including Clickers, Yammer, Sites at Penn State, lynda.com, Doceri, and ANGEL, and discover how they can be used in the classroom.
Also, the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence and ITS Training Services have collaborated to offer a Designing Assessments Series as a special WinterFest training event. The series is made up of four trainings sessions that ground the technical "how to" of building assessments in ANGEL inside a larger pedagogical framework. You can sign up to attend any one or more of the Designing Assessments Series sessions, meaning that you can pick and choose the ones the ones you want or sign up for the entire series.
Best of all, all of the WinterFest sessions are completely free and online, meaning that you can participate from the comfort of your own home with a mug of hot chocolate in your hand and no worry of the weather in your head.

John Bowman, professor of art, and Ann Shostrom, assistant professor of art, are participating in a group exhibition, Holiday Delights, at the Elizabeth Harris Gallery, New York, NY, through December 21, 2o13.
Nancy Locke, associate professor of art history, presented a paper, "The Quarry in the City: Charles Marville's Landscapes of the Carrières d'Amérique," at the Old Topographics: Photography and Urbanization in Nineteenth-Century Paris Symposium at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., December 6, 2013. The symposium followed a study day for scholars on December 5, and was held in conjunction with the exhibition, Charles Marville: Photographer of Paris.
Robin Thomas, assistant professor of art history, presented a paper, “The Bourbon Theatre of State and Architecture of Eighteenth-Century Naples,” at Princeton University, December 5, 2013.
Amy Albert Bloom, Ph.D. candidate in art education, published a chapter, “We are careful not to make too much noise: An infomercial disruption,” in Liminal Spaces and Call for Praxis(ing) (Information Age Publishing, Charlotte, NC), pp. 107-115.
Alphonso Walter Grant, Ph.D. candidate in art education, published a chapter, “A curricular exploration of The Boondocks for art education: A philosophical interpretation of black visual culture through the critical lens of double consciousness,” in Liminal Spaces and Call for Praxis(ing) (Information Age Publishing, Charlotte, NC), pp. 39-59. Grant received honorable mention for the James T. Sears Award, given to the top graduate student chapter published in the book.

This year, Dec. 25 will fall on a Wednesday, as will Jan. 1, 2014. The official University holiday period begins Monday, Dec. 23 and ends Wednesday, Jan. 1. Weekdays during that period are official University holidays – with the notable exception, however, of Tuesday, Dec. 31, which is not a University holiday. However, in order to provide a generally more desirable and efficient application of time off, University offices and facilities, except for essential services, will be closed Dec. 31 as well. Staff will need to account for the time appropriately, e.g., with vacation or no pay. Therefore, the University will be closed from the end of normal operations on Friday, Dec. 20, and will reopen on Thursday, Jan. 2.
