The Essence of Joy Alumni Singers will perform at the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 9, at the State College Presbyterian Church, located at 132 W. Beaver Ave., in State College, Pa. The choir's concert will feature traditional and contemporary spirituals and gospel music, and other works by African-American composers. This concert is open to the public; Arts Fest Buttons are required for admission. This will mark the choir's fifth consecutive appearance at the festival. The choir's artistic director, Anthony Leach, is an associate professor of music and music education at Penn State and served as Penn State’s 2009-10 laureate. He is the director and founder of Essence of Joy, and is the director of the Penn State University Choir. Founded in 2005 and comprised of alumni from Pennsylvania State University's Essence of Joy Choir, the Essence of Joy Alumni Singers perform sacred and secular music from the African and African-American tradition in an effort to entertain, inspire, affirm and unify the worldwide community. Under the artistic direction of Leach, the group has performed extensively in the United States, Europe and the Caribbean.
