Steven Smith, professor of music in piano, traveled to China in May 2011 to perform and give master classes at Beijing Normal University. He performed works from his multi-year “Piano Masterworks of Beethoven” programs, a series of eleven concerts presenting the thirty-two sonatas of Beethoven plus several other masterworks (variations, rondos, and bagatelles). His Beijing concert included three sonatas (Op. 27/Nos. 2, 57, and 101), plus the variations on “God Save the King.” In addition, Smith gave a talk on Beethoven and his piano music at Wanfang College, Henan Polytechnic University, with his Penn State D.M.A. candidate, Ying Zhao, serving as translator. Smith will complete the Penn State series with two concerts in fall 2011, one on September 25 at 4:00 p.m. (featuring the Hammerklavier sonata) and the second on November 13 at 8:00 p.m. (featuring the Diabelli Variations), both in Esber Recital Hall.
