Printer-friendly version Share

The Penn State School of Visual Arts' John M. Anderson Endowment and the Palmer Museum of Art are co-sponsoring screenings of four episodes in the award-winning PBS series, Art:21-Art in the Twenty-First Century. The episodes will be shown on four consecutive Thursdays at 6 p.m. in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium, Palmer Museum of Art, on October 8, 15, 22 and 29. Art:21-Art in the Twenty-First Century is the only series on television to focus exclusively on contemporary visual art and artists in the United States. The screenings are free and open to the public.

The first episode, "Compassion" (October 8), features artists whose works explore the possibility of understanding and reconciling past and present, while exposing injustice and expressing tolerance for others. Artists include William Kentridge, Doris Salcedo and Carrie Mae Weems.

The second episode, “Fantasy” (October 15), presents four artists whose works or personal stories transport viewers to imaginary worlds and altered states of consciousness. With works that seem at times hallucinatory, irreverent, and sublime, each of these artists pursues a vision first held in the mind's eye. Featured artists are Cao Fei, Mary Heilmann, Jeff Koons, and Florian Maier-Aichen.

Whether observing and satirizing society or reinventing icons of literature, art history, and popular culture, the artists featured in the third episode, “Transformation” (October 22), capture the sensibilities of our age while at times inhabiting the characters they have created. Featured artists include Paul McCarthy, Cindy Sherman, and Yinka Shonibare.

Artists invent new processes to convey the attitudes of today's supercharged, information-based society, examining why we find comfort in some systems while rebelling against others. The fourth episode, “Systems” (October 29), features artists who realize complex projects through acts of appropriation or accumulation. Featured artists are John Baldessari, Kimsooja, Allan McCollum, and Julie Mehretu. Wesley Miller, associate curator of Art21, will introduce the screening, and lead a discussion and question and answer session after the program.
