Palmer Museum of Art Holiday Art and Ornament Sale
Friends of the Palmer Museum of Art will feature Sue Harter in the 2012 Holiday Art and Ornament Sale on Saturday, December 8, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., at the museum. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Palmer Museum and will be used to extend the education outreach program, help acquire works of arts, and help ensure that the museum will remain a vital and free-admission resource for the community.

Così! is a unique version of Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte featuring ensembles and choruses from the famous opera juxtaposed with prose by 17th-century English playwright John Lilly. Directed by Ted Christopher, assistant professor of music and artistic director of Penn State Opera, with musical direction by Beverly A. Patton, associate professor of music, the opera will showcase 25 freshman through graduate students. Costumes designed by Richard St. Clair, associate professor of theatre. ~ Mosaic: A Sonic and Visual Spectacular, Sunday, December 9, 4:00 p.m., Eisenhower Auditorium
A thrilling fast-paced performance, Mosaic features an array of Penn State bands, choirs, orchestras, chamber ensembles, and soloists situated throughout Eisenhower Auditorium. Large ensembles give way to individuals. Jazz follows seventeenth-century masterworks. Voices resound in the balconies while instrumentalists take the stage. COLLEGE ANNOUNCEMENTS

All-College Meeting and Holiday Reception
The College of Arts and Architecture’s Fall 2012 All-College Meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 18, at 2:00 p.m. in the Hintz Family Alumni Center, with a holiday reception following until 5:00 p.m. If you plan to attend the reception, please reply via the online form at https://artsandarchitecture.psu.edu/2012-holiday-reception to ensure adequate food and beverages are available. If you are attending the meeting only and NOT the reception, no reply is necessary.

The Faculty and Staff Advisory Councils will jointly sponsor a canned food and children’s book drive for the State College Area Food Bank. The food bank is collecting donations of books for children of all ages over the holidays. They are particularly interested in educational books, but will welcome all types of children’s books. The food bank is also in need of a variety of canned goods and dry non-perishables, such as pasta. They also need peanut butter, canned juices, applesauce, ketchup, bars of soap, coffee, and granulated sugar. There will be council members in the lobby before and after the All-College meeting to accept your generous donation of food and/or books.

Staff Advisory Council Seeking Nominations for New Award
Nominations are being accepted by the College's Staff Advisory Council for the newly created Staff Spotlight Award that honors College of Arts and Architecture staff members who go above and beyond their normal routines in resolving difficult dilemmas or who have been exceptionally creative and responsive to the needs of others.

The Staff Spotlight Award was created to honor "staff stars" in the College, and the Staff Advisory Council aims to honor those staff members who regularly see potential in others, go the extra mile in a specific situation, and simply make life better for those around them.

Each nomination is considered on its own merit with no comparisons among nominees. With the College's large group of talented staff, examples of those who foster a more caring and thoughtful atmosphere are abundant.  One (1) honoree will be selected.  An electronic nomination form may be found on the Staff Advisory Council website at http://artsandarchitecture.psu.edu/facstaff/sac-special-recognition-form. The deadline for nominations is December 3, 2012.  The honoree will be recognized at the December All-College Meeting, receiving a certificate and $500.

Bernstein’s Mass - Town and Gown Choir
A town and gown (community and PSU students) choir of 30-40 voices is being formed during the spring semester to supplement Concert Choir and Essence of Joy in performances of Leonard Bernstein's Mass, the centerpiece of celebrations to mark the College of Arts and Architecture's fiftieth anniversary.

Bernstein's Mass is an exciting and eclectic theatre piece commissioned for the opening of the Kennedy Center in 1971. Performers include a large symphony orchestra, taped excerpts, rock band, street chorus, children's choir and massed choir. A remarkable set has been designed for the Eisenhower stage, and the event will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The performances will be conducted by Gerardo Edelstein, professor of music, and the chorus will be prepared by Chris Kiver, associate professor of music. The choir is not required to act!

The choir will rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 p.m., in room 110 in Music Building 1. Rehearsals will begin on January 9 and continue through the performances. As well as the weekly rehearsals, there are a number of extra rehearsals, typical of a theatrical production, currently scheduled as follows. The expectation is that members will be present at all Wednesday rehearsals and all rehearsals in production week, April 1-6.

Penn State students will be able to register for one credit under a 400-level special projects number (to be advised). Students who are already members of the regularly scheduled choirs at Penn State are eligible for the Bernstein choir only, if they maintain their membership in their current ensemble.

For faculty, staff and community members, auditions will be held with Dr. Kiver, before the end of this semester (send an email to cak27@psu.edu to arrange a time). Current Penn State students can audition before the end of semester, or sign up for the regularly scheduled choral auditions that will be held during the first week of class in January. Sign-up sheets are now posted next to room 106 (Dr. Drafall's office) in Music Building 1. As the score is not easy and we have limited rehearsal time, auditionees will be required to have sound music reading skills and previous choral experience. Questions can be directed to Chris Kiver.

Arts and Architecture 50th Anniversary Registration
Registration has opened for the College of Arts and Architecture’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, scheduled for April 4-7, 2013. All Arts and Architecture alumni were mailed a postcard, and those with an email address on their alumni record were sent an invitation linking them to the registration site.

Current faculty and staff members are encouraged to participate in the activities that will take place. The standard registration fee of $25 will be waived for faculty and staff who wish to register. You will only be asked to pay for any events you choose that have a cost assigned to them. In addition, all current faculty and staff members who want a 50th anniversary t-shirt will be able to receive one free.

After the holiday break, look for another announcement about the discount code that will waive your registration fee. A t-shirt request form will also be made available at that time.

Select Art History Classes Invited to Study in Sicily for Spring Break 2013
Open to students in selected art history classes, the Department of Art History is offering Sicily in the Norman and Baroque Eras, a special study abroad program during spring break 2013. An embedded program with Elizabeth Smith, associate professor of art history, and Robin Thomas, assistant professor of art history, the 11-day program provides a unique opportunity for students to study the art and architecture of Sicily. College Performance Ticket Lottery
Megan Kolher, instructional designer, was the winner of the college’s ticket lottery drawing for two tickets to Mosaic, and Amy Milgrub Marshall, writer/editor, was the recipient of two tickets to Tap Dogs.

Organized by the Staff Advisory Council, a ticket lottery system is being offered again this year for select performances throughout the college. 2013 Symposium for Teaching and Learning with Technology
Faculty can learn and share innovative uses of technology to enhance teaching, learning, and research at “Unlocking Our Potential and the Culture of Teaching and Learning,” 2013 Penn State Symposium for Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT), Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel, Saturday, March 16, 2013, 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. Keynote speakers this year will be author Frans Johansson and George Siemens of Learning Analytics. Johansson will be the morning keynote speaker. He is the best-selling author of The Medici Effect: Breakthrough Insights at the Intersection of Ideas, Concepts, and Cultures. Siemens will be the lunch keynote speaker. He is the author of Knowing Knowledge and Handbook of Emerging Technologies for Learning

2013 Faculty/Staff Achievement Awards
The University’s Faculty and Staff Achievement Awards are awarded to faculty and staff who exhibit excellence in the workplace. They include the Barash Award for Human Service; McKay Donkin Award; Award for Administrative Excellence; Staff Excellence Award; Support Staff Award; and the Dr. James Robinson Equal Opportunity Award. FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Sue Haug, director of the School of Music, has been elected vice president of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), the national accrediting agency for music and music-related disciplines. Founded in 1924, NASM is an organization of schools, conservatories, colleges and universities with approximately 644 accredited institutional members. She will serve as vice president for three years, followed by a three-year term as president.

In the eastern Indian state of Mizoram live approximately 100,000 Chin refugees, who fled the neighboring country of Burma to escape ethnic, political and religious persecution under a brutal military regime. Despite their stark financial situation and depressing living conditions, the Chin maintain a quiet dignity. And that is what Steven Rubin, assistant professor of art, hopes to capture when he spends January–May 2013 in Mizoram photographing the Chin, supported by a Fulbright-Nehru grant. Rubin’s project, “Borderline Existence: Burmese Chin in Mizoram State,” is an interdisciplinary documentary project incorporating photography, audio and narrative text. Stephanie Snider, assistant professor of art, has a solo exhibition, Thresholds, at Schmidt and Handrup, Cologne, Germany, which continues through December 21, 2012.

Wendy Bargstadt, M.A. candidate in Musicology, presented a paper, “The Two Worlds of Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress,” at The Rake's Progress: Stravinsky, Hogarth, Hockney, Auden, and Kallman conference, University of Colorado-Boulder, October 26-27, 2012. The paper was advised by Maureen Carr, distinguished professor of music theory, and Eric McKee, associate professor of music theory. Bargstadt, a native of Norfolk, NE, plans to pursue a Ph.D. in musicology upon graduation in May 2013.
