Stuckeman School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture
~ Event: A Celebration of Central Pennsylvania Architecture and the Work of A. William Hajjar, Sunday, January 13, 2013, 3:00-5:00 p.m., 104 Paterno Library
A series of activities, sponsored by the Architecture and Landscape Architecture Library and the Eberly Family Special Collections Library, to celebrate the gift of Hajjar drawings and the public release of a new database documenting local architecture.
• A display of original plans and drawings of local houses designed by A. William Hajjar, a former Penn State faculty member who challenged the conservative look of the State College community in the 1950s and 1960s with his contemporary-style homes. More than fifty years later, these forty-plus buildings still delight those who appreciate post-war modern design, and their owners are proud to play a part in conserving a significant part of local history.
• The unveiling of “ Central Pennsylvania Architecture and Landscape Architecture,” a new digital collection that documents the work of Hajjar and many other designers active in the region, including buildings by modernists Philip Hallock and Kenneth Heidrich. Comprising online exhibitions and a growing database of 1,000 well-documented images, it includes research and photography contributed by Robert Malcom and Arthur Anderson, Jr.

This exhibition offers a retrospective look at printmaker James Mullen’s preferred medium, the linoleum cut, which he has found particularly suitable for the linearly abstract still lifes and portraits that have marked his fifty-year career.
~ “Varied and Untried”: Early Twentieth-Century American Painting from the James and Barbara Palmer Collection, January 13-May 5, 2013
This exhibition highlights many of the ashcan realists and modernists, including Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, Georgia O’Keefe, and John Sloan, who were willing to pursue subjects and styles both “varied and untried.”

The Faculty and Staff Advisory Councils will jointly sponsor a canned food and children’s book drive for the State College Area Food Bank. The food bank is collecting donations of books for children of all ages over the holidays. They are particularly interested in educational books, but will welcome all types of children’s books. The food bank is also in need of a variety of canned goods and dry non-perishables, such as pasta. They also need peanut butter, canned juices, applesauce, ketchup, bars of soap, coffee, and granulated sugar. There will be council members in the lobby before and after the All-College meeting to accept your generous donation of food and/or books.
Bernstein’s Mass - Town and Gown Choir
A town and gown (community and PSU students) choir of 30-40 voices is being formed during the spring semester to supplement Concert Choir and Essence of Joy in performances of Leonard Bernstein's Mass, the centerpiece of celebrations to mark the College of Arts and Architecture's fiftieth anniversary.
Bernstein's Mass is an exciting and eclectic theatre piece commissioned for the opening of the Kennedy Center in 1971. Performers include a large symphony orchestra, taped excerpts, rock band, street chorus, children's choir and massed choir. A remarkable set has been designed for the Eisenhower stage, and the event will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The performances will be conducted by Gerardo Edelstein, professor of music, and the chorus will be prepared by Chris Kiver, associate professor of music. The choir is not required to act!
The choir will rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 p.m., in room 110 in Music Building 1. Rehearsals will begin on January 9 and continue through the performances. As well as the weekly rehearsals, there are a number of extra rehearsals, typical of a theatrical production, currently scheduled as follows. The expectation is that members will be present at all Wednesday rehearsals and all rehearsals in production week, April 1-6.

Penn State students will be able to register for one credit under a 400-level special projects number (to be advised). Students who are already members of the regularly scheduled choirs at Penn State are eligible for the Bernstein choir only, if they maintain their membership in their current ensemble.
For faculty, staff and community members, auditions will be held with Dr. Kiver, before the end of this semester (send an email to email@example.com to arrange a time). Current Penn State students can audition before the end of semester, or sign up for the regularly scheduled choral auditions that will be held during the first week of class in January. Sign-up sheets are now posted next to room 106 (Dr. Drafall's office) in Music Building 1. As the score is not easy and we have limited rehearsal time, auditionees will be required to have sound music reading skills and previous choral experience. Questions can be directed to Chris Kiver.
Holiday Break Safety Reminders
The University holiday break is approaching. As we approach the last day of final exams, Friday, December 21, 2012, the office of Physical Plant has reminded everyone that they will be instituting temperature setbacks in most of our buildings (except Music I and II, Palmer, Visual Arts, Ceramic Arts, and Downtown Theatre Center) to a maintenance level of 50 degrees F in efforts to conserve energy. The temperature setback will remain in effect until Wednesday, January 2, 2013. It is important that everyone in our College participate in the energy savings initiative and do the following as you prepare to leave the campus for the break:
1. Shut off all office equipment and lights when you leave for break, including computers, monitors, printers, copiers, coffee makers, and task lighting. If you have a laptop computer, take it home!
2. Unplug iPods, digital cameras, and cell phone chargers when not in use.
3. Close all office and classroom doors. Make sure operable windows are closed too. Make sure all of these are locked.
4. Drawing curtains or closing blinds also will help retain building heat.
5. Office refrigerators should be emptied and turned off for the break. This is a great time to dispose of old food items.
6. All holiday decorations are to be turned off.
7. Any live holiday decorations are to be removed from your office or building.
PERSONAL SPACE HEATERS
Remember that personal portable space heaters are NOT permitted in University buildings unless provided by OPP for extraordinary circumstances.
Officially provided space heaters must be turned off when areas are not occupied.
All NON-OFFICIAL space heaters must be removed from University property.
On a personal level, the New Year is a good time to change batteries in your smoke detectors at home and have your home fire extinguishers checked or replaced. Be safe in your travels. We will see everyone in 2013!

Bonnie Levinthal, associate professor of visual arts, and Yvonne Love, senior lecturer of art, both from Abington Campus, are participating in a group exhibition, Mitos and Realidades: Inspiraciones de la Republica de Cuba (Myths and Realities: Inspirations from the Republic of Cuba), at Arcadia University, through January 6, 2013. The exhibition is part of Arcadia University’s Global Faculty Development Program in Havana, Cuba, that was held during summer 2012. A Line Around an Idea, a traveling exhibition of hand drawings of James Wines, professor of architecture and president of SITE, is being held at the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture, City College of New York, through April 3, 2013. The exhibit covers the years from 1972 to 2012. The main intent is to show the value of hand drawing for idea development—from first sketch to final rendering. The focus is on calligraphic content, graphic signification, and conceptual process. To read the full story, click here.
The new Denny’s Restaurant Las Vegas, flagship restaurant for Denny’s Neonopolis Network Project which opened in November 2012, was designed by SITE, an architectural firm founded by James Wines, professor of architecture and president of SITE.
