News from the Dean

Dean Barbara O. Korner

November 2018

We just completed a successful #GivingTuesday campaign for the Blue Band and the Glee Club, with hundreds of alumni and friends making a gift to support those iconic Penn State organizations. We are proud the College of Arts and Architecture could be a part of Penn State’s celebration of the power of giving back.

Fortunately, “giving back” to the College of Arts and Architecture does not just happen on certain days of the year. We are grateful for the ongoing generosity of alumni and friends, whose support is integral to our work.

Perhaps the most grateful recipients of your generosity are our student scholarship recipients. As the costs of a college education continue to rise, more and more students are in need of scholarship support in order to finish their degrees.

Recognizing that need, many donors choose to annually contribute a gift earmarked for the general scholarship fund for one of our academic programs. Others have chosen to make gifts to the college’s Alumni Society Scholarship, which has grown from two $750 scholarships in 2008 to seven $1,000 scholarships today, awarded to students in each of the college’s degree programs. The Alumni Society’s new goal is to be able to award seven scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each.

Many alumni have also stepped forward to establish other scholarships in recognition of specific areas of need or in areas particularly significant to them. Two examples are the Blue Band Diversity Fund, established by Harry Burns and Patricia Wirth to provide resources for diversity recruitment, and the Steve Artz and Tom Strickler Arts and Architecture Scholarship, for undergraduates who advocate for or contribute to the LGBTQA community.

One of the most rewarding aspects of serving as dean has been getting to know so many alumni and friends, whose creativity, dedication and generosity are simply inspiring. During my last few months at Penn State, I hope to have the opportunity to see some of you in person, and to thank you for all you have done to make the College of Arts and Architecture such a special place.

Sincerely,

Barbara O. Korner
