News from the Dean: March 2015

We’re in the midst of our end-of-the-semester marathon, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Within the next few weeks we’ll present a production of La Boheme on the Eisenhower Auditorium stage, featuring sets from the Pittsburgh Opera (March 28–29 if you’re local!);Dogfight at Penn State Centre Stage; a collaborative outdoor production of Julius Caesar on the steps of Old Main; and numerous recitals and end-of-year concerts for our musical ensembles. The Stuckeman School just hosted a very successful Career Day, and the School of Visual Arts had its first “Portfolio Day” for prospective students (click here for photo galleries from those events). We also just celebrated with our Alumni Achievement Award winner, Andrew “Gif” Giffin, a successful lighting designer who returned to campus to receive the Alumni Association’s award for alumni age 35 and younger.

The highlight of the spring semester, as always, is our endowment and awards luncheon, scheduled this year to coincide with Blue-White Weekend and with our production of Julius Caesar, which is being presented April 15–17. This year, for the first time, the Arts and Architecture Alumni Society is hosting a tailgate before the Blue-White Game on April 18 for alumni and friends of the college and graduating seniors. The event will feature a silent auction to benefit the Arts and Architecture Alumni Society’s scholarship endowment. Registration for the event is strongly encouraged (https://eventbrite.com/event/15716689040/).

In this issue you’ll read about the Glee Club’s Dream Matching Challenge, continuing awards for our fantastic production ofBlood at the Root, the launch of our Arts and Design Research Incubator, and much more. If you’re local, I encourage you to check out the many performances we have before the end of the semester. If you will be visiting campus for Blue-White Weekend, please make an effort to catch Julius Caesar on Friday night or to attend our tailgate on Saturday. Happy Spring!
