He is the immediate past conductor of the Penn State University Choir and taught undergraduate and graduate courses in choral music education. Leach holds a doctorate in music education and a master of music in conducting from Penn State, as well as a bachelor of science in music education from Lebanon Valley College. During the 2009-10 academic year, Leach served as the Penn State University Laureate.

Penn State Altoona initiated the Meling Award in 2006 to honor the memory of its longtime associate dean for Academic Affairs, who died in 2005.
