College Now Using Activity Insight Software to Track Faculty Activity

Beginning this semester, the College of Arts and Architecture is joining the ranks of other Penn State colleges and campuses in employing an online software tool called Activity Insight.

Activity Insight enables faculty members to collect, organize, and export their professional activities and accomplishments for annual reviews, promotion and tenure, faculty websites, and other purposes. It also allows academic units, colleges, and campuses to manage large reporting processes in a less time-consuming fashion. A college-wide faculty training will take place on Friday, Feb. 16, noon–1:30 p.m., in the Stuckeman Jury Space.

“In Arts and Architecture, Activity Insight will allow us to quickly run reports listing all faculty exhibitions and performances that took place in a given time period,” according to Andy Schulz, associate dean for research and faculty development. “This will be of great benefit as we seek to tell the story of the impact of the arts at Penn State and beyond.”

Faculty should use Activity Insight to report their professional activities in teaching, research, and service for the 2017 calendar year. Complementing this data collection will be a narrative statement describing accomplishments in 2017 that will be submitted to the department head or school director.

Beginning next year (2018–19), the college will use Activity Insight in second- and fourth-year reviews for faculty on the tenure track, and in the following year (2019–20) it will be used for promotion and tenure dossiers and for post-tenure reviews.

In addition to Friday’s training session, additional unit-level trainings are planned, and will be announced through departmental/school channels. All training sessions will begin with a brief overview of Activity Insight, followed by a question-and-answer period and hands-on assistance in data entry. Nicole Gampe, the University administrator for Activity Insight, will lead these sessions.
