SoVA Professor John Bowman Receives Positive Review in ARTnews

Painting by John Bowman

Open City, painter and SoVA professor John Bowman's recent solo show at Winston W├Ąchter Fine Art, New York, received a positive review in the April issue of the prestigious national art journal ARTnews.

"Having spent much of his time in Manhattan, painter John Bowman is no stranger to the cityscape," writes reviewer Meredith Mendelsohn. "But the locales he captures in his latest series of paintings don’t show bustling boulevards or crowded corners so popular throughout art history. Rather, he offers a fresh take on the genre, portraying densely packed clusters of dwellings stacked up tightly."

Bowman's exhibited oil paintings showed a series of layered cityscapes that use visual fragments from real and remembered places in Albania, Turkey, Egypt and Eastern Europe. Each composite city represents an imagined hybrid—a place transformed by time and memory in which familiar buildings and landmarks are repeated, rearranged, eroded or eradicated.

Bowman works in a variety of mediums, including painting, drawing and sculpture. He recently participated in “Service to Public Areas,” a collaborative public art project in Shkodra, Albania. He has shown internationally and is represented in many private and museum collections.
